Monitoring a remote computer over the Internet

 

a.    Prepare the Station computer

 


If Station computer is behind a router (with a firewall)

 

 NOTICE: Adjusting your firewall/router settings may be against your corporate security policy, find out first, before carrying out the steps below.

 

If your ISP assigned a static IP address to your Internet connection.

    1     Note the static public (router) IP address assigned by your ISP.

    2     Note your e-Surveiller port number:

a.       Open the e-Surveiller Station.

b.      Select Settings from the View menu.
The Settings window appears.

c.       Click to select the Connection tab

d.      Note the number in the e-Surveiller Station port field.

e.       Click Cancel.

    3     Specify the public (router) IP address in the Station connections settings:

a.       Open the e-Surveiller Station.

b.      Select Settings from the View menu.
The Settings window appears.

c.       Click to select the Connection tab

d.      Click to check the Report Local IP as checkbox and enter the public (router) IP address.

e.       Click OK

    4     Configure your router to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on the e-Surveiller port.

    5     Configure your router to forward the e-Surveiller port to the Station computer.

    6     Configure any installed software firewall to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on the e-Surveiller port.

If your ISP assigns IP addresses dynamically to your Internet connection or you are not sure

    1     Note your e-Surveiller port number:

a.       Open the e-Surveiller Station.

b.      Select Settings from the View menu.
The Settings window appears.

c.       Click to select the Connection tab.

d.      Note the number in the e-Surveiller Station port field.

e.       Click Cancel.

    2     Configure your router to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on the e-Surveiller port.

    3     Configure your router to allow outgoing connections for IRC (port 6667), and/or the Gnutella (port 6346) ports.

    4     Configure your router to allow incoming connections for IDENT (port 113).

    5     Configure your router to forward the e-Surveiller port to the Station computer.

    6     Configure your router to forward the IDENT port (port 113) to the Station computer.

    7     Configure any installed software firewall to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on the e-Surveiller port.

    8     Configure any installed software firewall to allow outgoing connections on IRC (port 6667) and/or on Gnutella (port 6346).

    9     Configure any installed software firewall to allow incoming connections on IDENT (port 113)

 10     Make sure the e-Surveiller Station is connected to the IRC or Gnutella network:

a.      Open the e-Surveiller Station

b.      Check the IRC and Gnutella connection status on the status bar in the bottom  right corner of the e-Surveiller Station window.

If the status bar is not visible, click Show Status bar from the view menu.

c.       If the IRC status indicator shows the figure below then the Station is connected to the IRC network and will need no further configuration.


d.      If the Gnutella status indicator shows the figure below then the Station is connected to the Gnutella network and will need no further configuration.


e.      If the IRC and Gnutella status indicator show the figure below then the Station is neither connected to the IRC network nor the Gnutella network. In this case you need to change the Station IRC and Gnutella connection settings so that it can connect to at least one network.


To change the Station IRC and Gnutella connection settings:

·         Select Settings from the View menu.
The settings window appears.

·         Click the Connection tab.

·         Set the IRC Server field to linkirc.surveille.net and set the corresponding port number to 6667

·         Set the Gnutella connection address field to linkpeer.surveille.net and set the corresponding port number to 6346

·         Click OK.

I’m behind a router but I can’t adjust its firewall settings or I can’t forward a port on the router to the station PC.

    1     Set your e-Surveiller port to port 80:

a.      Open the e-Surveiller Station.

b.      Select Settings from the View menu.
The Settings window appears.

c.       Click to select the Connection tab.

d.      Enter 80 in the e-Surveiller Station port field.

e.      Click OK.

 

    2     Configure any installed software firewall to allow outgoing connections on port 80.

 

  NOTE: See firewalls for more information on firewalls.

  NOTE: This setup will let you connect to remote Monitors by pressing F2 in the e-Surveiller Station and specifying the monitored computer’s IP address. This may be difficult if the remote Monitor is behind a firewall or router or if the monitored computer’s IP address is not static.

  NOTE: The remote Monitor will not be able to connect to the station with this setup.

 




If Station computer is directly connected to the Internet

 

If your ISP assigned a static IP address to your computer.

    1     Note the static public (router) IP address assigned by your ISP.

    2     Note your e-Surveiller port number:

a.      Open the e-Surveiller Station.

b.      Select Settings from the View menu.
The Settings window appears.

c.       Click to select the Connection tab

d.      Note the number in the e-Surveiller Station port field.

e.      Click Cancel.

    3     Configure any installed software and hardware firewalls to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on the e-Surveiller port.

 

  NOTE: See firewalls for more information on firewalls.

 

If your ISP assigns IP addresses dynamically to your computer or you are not sure

    1     Note your e-Surveiller port number:

a.      Open the e-Surveiller Station.

b.      Select Settings from the View menu.
The Settings window appears.

c.       Click to select the Connection tab.

d.      Note the number in the e-Surveiller Station port field.

e.      Click Cancel.

    2     Configure any installed software and hardware firewalls to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on the e-Surveiller port.

    3     Configure any installed software and hardware firewalls to allow outgoing connections on IRC (port 6667) and/or on Gnutella (port 6346).

    4     Configure any installed software and hardware firewalls to allow incoming connections on IDENT (port 113)

    5     Make sure the e-Surveiller Station is connected to the IRC or Gnutella network:

a.      Open the e-Surveiller Station

b.      Check the IRC and Gnutella connection status on the status bar in the bottom right corner of the e-Surveiller Station window.

If the status bar is not visible, click Show Status bar from the view menu.

c.       If the IRC status indicator shows the figure below then the Station is connected to the IRC network and will need no further configuration.


d.      If the Gnutella status indicator shows the figure below then the Station is connected to the Gnutella network and will need no further configuration.


e.      If the IRC and Gnutella status indicator show the figure below then the Station is neither connected to the IRC network nor the Gnutella network. In this case you need to change the Station IRC and Gnutella connection settings so that it can connect to at least one network.


To change the Station IRC and Gnutella connection settings:

·         Select Settings from the View menu.
The settings window appears.

·         Click the Connection tab.

·         Set the IRC Server field to linkirc.surveille.net and set the corresponding port number to 6667

·         Set the Gnutella connection address field to linkpeer.surveille.net and set the corresponding port number to 6346

·         Click OK.

b.    Generate and install the Monitor

 

    1     Start the Generate New Monitor wizard.

 



    2     Select Via the Internet.

    3     Click Next.
The Installation Specifics page appears.


 

    4     If you want to monitor one remote computer with this Monitor, Click to select the On one computer option.
If you want to monitor more than one remote computer with this Monitor, Click to select the On several computers option.

    5     Enter a name for the Monitor you want to generate in the Identifier field.

    6     You may enter a description for the Monitor you want to generate in the Description field.

    7     You may change the suggested filename in the Monitor Filename field.

 

  NOTE: The suggested Monitor Filename may differ from the one in the above illustration.

                                                                                                               

    8     If you want to include instructions to be executed by the Monitor, click to check the Include instructions check box. (see instructions)  

    9     If you want the monitor to install without displaying any notices, click to check the Quiet Installation check box.

 10     Click Next.

The Connection Options page appears.

 



 11     If your ISP assigned your Internet connection a static permanent IP address or host name, click to select Yes, the static IP address or host name is and enter the static IP address or host name. Click Next and skip to step 14.
If your ISP assigns your Internet connection’s IP address dynamically, click to select the No option.
If you are not sure if your ISP assigned your Internet connection a static permanent IP address, click to select the Not sure option.

 12     Click Next.
The 3rd Party Network Connection page appears.



 13     Click Next.

  NOTE: The suggested IRC and Gnutella networks may differ from the ones in the above illustration.

The First Log Upload Location window appears.




 14     In the Upload Method drop down list:

 

a    Select FTP Location if you want the Monitor to upload log reports to an FTP site.

 

·         Enter the full host name of the FTP host (e.g. myftphost.com or ftp.mysite.com) in the FTP Host field.

                   NOTE: Do not specify additional text in the FTP Host field such as ftp://myftphost.com or myftphost.com/home.

 

·         If you want the log reports to be stored in a directory different from the default login directory, specify the directory in the Directory field.

·         Enter the login user name and password for the remote FTP site in the User name and Password fields.

 

b    Select Email(SMTP) if you want the Monitor to email log reports to an email address.

 

·         Enter the SMTP (outgoing email) server, the Monitor will connect to, in the SMTP Server field.

·         Enter the account name (user ID) for the server in the User ID field.

·         Enter the password for the account in the Password field.

·         Enter the originating email address in the From field.

·         Enter the destination email address in the To field.

·         Enter the subject of the email in the Subject field.

·         If the SMTP server does not use the default SMTP port, click to check the Use a different port (SMTP) checkbox, then enter the port number. 

·         If the SMTP server requires POP3 authentication prior to relaying email, click to check the Authenticate with POP3 Server checkbox, then enter the POP3 server in the POP3 server field. To specify a non-default POP3 port, click to check the checkbox on the right, then enter the port number.

  NOTE: For more information, see configuring the email(SMTP) Log upload method.

 

c     Select None if you don’t want the Monitor to upload or email log reports.

 

 15     Click Next.

If you did not select None as the upload method at step 14, the Second Log Upload Location page appears, otherwise skip to step 20.


 

 16     You can select a second method by which the Monitor will upload or transfer log reports if the first method fails. Select None in the Upload Method drop down list if you want the Monitor to use only the first log upload method.

  NOTE: See step 14 for information on the options you can choose in the Upload Method drop down list.

 

 17     Click Next.
If you did not select None as the upload method at step
16, the Third Log Upload Location page appears, otherwise skip to step 22.

 

 

 18     You can select a third method by which the Monitor will upload or transfer log reports if the first and second methods fails. Select None in the Upload Method drop down list if you want the Monitor to use only the first and second log upload methods.

  NOTE: See step 16 for information on the options you can choose in the Upload Method drop down list.

 

 19     Click Next.
The Other Options page appears.

 

 20     Specify the method by which the Monitor will poll for configuration updates, if it is unable to connect to the Station:

 

a    If you want the Monitor to check for configuration updates on a file on the Internet, select Internet Location in the Update Method drop down list.

 

·         Enter the full URL with a filename e.g. ftp://ftp.myhost.com/updates/monitor1.cfg or http://www.mywebsite.com/mysection/monitor1.cfg in the Address field.

·         If the address is an FTP address, enter the login user name and password for the FTP site in the User name and Password fields

 

b   If you want the Monitor to check for configuration updates on a file on the monitored computer or on the network, select Local/Network File in the Update Method drop down list.

 

·         Enter the full local or network pathname and file. (e.g. c:\configs\monitor1.cfg or \\server\updates\monitor1.cfg) in the Address field.

·         If the file is a network file, make sure the folder portion of the address is accessible to the monitored computer.  You may do this by sharing the folder.
For example, if the address is \\server\updates\monitor1.cfg, then make sure the \\server\updates\ folder is shared.

 

c    If you don’t want the Monitor to check for configuration updates, select None in the Update Method drop down list. The Monitor will only be able to update its configuration if it connects to the Station.

 

  NOTE: It is important to specify an Update Method if you must be able to update a remote Monitor even if it is unable to connect the station.

  NOTE: See Alternative Configuration Update Methods for more information.

 

 21     Click Next.
The Build Location page appears.

 

 

 22     You may change the suggested folder in the Folder field by clicking Browse to select a different folder. You may specify a new folder by clicking New Folder to create one.

 

  NOTE: The suggested folder may differ from the one in the above illustration.

 

 23     Click Next.
The Monitor Configuration Summary page appears.

 

 

 24     Review the monitor configuration. You can use the scroll bar to scroll through the list.

 25     Click Finish.

You may have to wait for a few minutes for the wizard to generate the Monitor.

The Monitor Successfully Generated page appears.




 26     Click Open Folder
The Windows® explorer folder containing the generated Monitor installer appears.

 

 

 27     Transfer the generated Monitor installer to the computer you want to monitor. (You may do so by copying the Monitor installer into a flash disk or floppy disk and accessing the disk from the target computer.)

 

NOTICE: DO NOT run this Monitor installer on the station computer.

You may return to the e-Surveiller Station to close the Generate New Monitor wizard.

 

 28     Run the Monitor installer on the computer you want to monitor, to install the Monitor.

 29     Configure any installed software and hardware firewalls on the monitored computer to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on the e-Surveiller port.

 30     Configure any installed software and hardware firewalls on the monitored computer to allow outgoing connections on IRC (port 6667) and/or on Gnutella (port 6346).

 31     Configure any installed software and hardware firewalls on the monitored computer to allow incoming connections on IDENT (port 113).

 32     If the monitored computer is behind a router, configure the router to forward the e-Surveiller port to the monitored computer.

 33     If the monitored computer is behind a router, configure the router to forward the IDENT port (port 113) to the monitored computer.

If you chose the On several computers option at step 4, repeat steps 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33 on all the remote computers you want to monitor.

You can delete the Monitor installer after installation is complete.

 

Your setup is complete.
